Awkward moment at Blockbuster...
I went to Blockbuster to get a movie tonight and, while waiting in the checkout line, I spotted some funny candies that are basically a pacifier with fake "grillz" that fit on your front, top teeth. I thought this was pretty hilarious and I have some friends back in MT who I thought would find it hilarious so I decided to buy two sets-
Me to cashier: I thought these were too hilarious to pass up, so I had to buy these!
Cashier (who happens to be African-American): Yeah? I think they are more....insensitive than funny. We have parents buying these for their kids all the time. Its like you might as well just paint on black face and start shining shoes.
Me: Uhh...haha...
Cashier: Would you like a bag for these?
Me: Umm....no...actually, yes, please. Thanks, have a nice night (said putting on best smile I can manage).
I have been deconstructing this short conversation all night: "OMG, does he think I am a racist? Wait, AM I a racist because I bought these? What do I do if I see him next time I am at Blockbuster? Did I just purchase something that is reinforcing racial stereotypes and that might be offensive to people? Crap!! I just thought they were kinda funny..."
Anyway, it was just kinda weird and awkward and made me think...
